Which food do you associate with the sunny summer season? Fresh fruits and juices maybe? For me, juicy watermelons and fragrant oranges are the most summery fruits. So this tutorial is inspired by an anticipation of a bright and warm summer, full of ripe fruits. 

Today we are going to create a colorful and stylish pattern with watermelons and oranges in Adobe Illustrator. We’ll create two main and four additional elements and make a pattern with them using the Pattern tool.

1. How to Make a Whole Watermelon

Step 1

First, we’re going to set up a New Document (File > New Document or Control-N) and choose the following settings:

• Width: 500 px
• Height: 500 px
• Units: Points (or Pixels)
• Artboards: 1
• Color Mode: RGB

Step 2

And now let’s start growing our tasty watermelon.

Don’t forget to go to the View panel and turn Smart Guides on. With the Ellipse Tool (L) make a 150 x150 px purple (#8472ce) circle.

Choose the Pen Tool (P) and dark purple color (#4a288c). Make three curved stripes on the left half of our basic shape.

Then Copy these stripes (Control-C), Paste to the same place (Control-Shift-V) and, with a right-click, go to Transform > Reflect and reflect them horizontally. While holding Shift, move them to the right side of the basic shape. 

Step 3

Now let’s make a semi-transparent shadow. 

With the Rectangle Tool (M), create a big random rectangle. Set its opacity to 45% on the upper Opacity panel and color it purple (#47034c). Move it to the right side of the watermelon. Then, keeping the rectangle and the basic watermelon’s shape selected, choose the Shape Builder Tool (Shift-M) and, while holding Alt, remove the redundant part of the rectangle. 

Step 4

Now we’ll make three hotspots. 

Choose the Ellipse Tool (L) and click on the middle of the left side of the watermelon. Set the size to 17 x 17 px and click OK (or Enter on your keyboard). Then in the same way make two 7 x 7 px circles on both sides of the first circle. Color it all pale purple (#d6c7f9). 

Select all parts of the watermelon and Group (Control-G) them. 

2. How to Make a Slice of Watermelon

Step 1

Let’s see what’s inside our watermelon. 

Copy the previous watermelon and Paste on a new layer on the Layers panel.

Make a circle with the same size as the basic shape (150×150 px), but colored in #6042a8. Place it over the watermelon.

Step 2

Make a 125 x 125 px circle, and color it in soft pink (#f294b6). Align it to the previous circle using the upper Align panel. 

Then make a 110 x 110 px circle colored in magenta (#df2754). Align it too.

Step 3

With the Line Segment Tool (\), make a line without fill and color. Place the line in the middle of the watermelon vertically. Keeping the three circles forming the inner part of the watermelon and the line selected (see the picture below), Divide them using the Pathfinder panel. Then delete all parts from the left side.  

Step 4

Now for the seeds. 

Make a small circle colored in dark purple (#4a288c). With the Direct Selection Tool (A), select the top anchor of the circle and drag it a bit to the top to form a seed. 

Then make four more copies of the seed and place all of them over the right side of the magenta shape.

Also add a semi-transparent shadow on the bottom side of the slice. Copy its color from the shadow of the full watermelon using the Eyedropper Tool (I). 

Now you know what’s inside our watermelon.  

Step 5

And let’s quickly make a slice. 

Just Copy all the parts forming the slice, Paste them to a new Layer on the Layers panel, and Group them (Control-G). 

3. How to Create a Slice of Orange

Step 1

Let’s start with a 70 x 70 px circle colored in orange (#f47a2a). 

Add a 60 x 60 px circle, color it #f9a03f, and align it inside the previous shape. Then create a circle colored in pale orange (#f9d1aa). Place it over the previous circle. 

Step 2

Let’s add segments, full of juice. 

Make a 10 x 10 px circle colored in #f47a2a. Select its bottom anchor and drag it lower to form a drop.

Create seven copies and place all of them on the previous circle shape. 

Step 3

And make a shadow as we did before with the watermelon, but set the Opacity to 30%. 

4. How to Divide the Orange

Step 1

Copy the orange’s half to a new Layer and Divide its shadow horizontally. Create a shape colored in deep orange (#f25d0a). Place it over the orange’s half. Make a few 7 x 7 px and 3 x 3 px circles on its left side. Color them in pale orange (#f9a03f). 

Step 2

And we’ll make two pretty leaves.

With the Ellipse Tool (L), make an oval colored in light purple (#8472ce) and convert its top and bottom anchors to form a leaf. 

Place a random rectangle colored in dark purple (#281356) over the right side of the leaf. Delete the redundant part with the Shape Builder Tool (Shift-M) as we did before. 

Step 3

Turn the leaf 45 degrees (holding Shift) and place it above the orange and behind it. Then Copy it, Paste, Reflect horizontally and place the new copy near the first leaf. Change the places of its colors.  

Step 4

Delete the right side of the deep orange shape. 

As you can see in my screenshot, some pale spots went behind the divided parts. Let’s drag them over the basic shape again on the Layers panel. 

Step 5 

Copy all the parts forming the orange slice to a new layer. Then divide it vertically with the help of the Line Segment Tool (\) and the Pathfinder panel, as we did before. Delete the left side. 

Now we have all the elements to create our juicy bright seamless pattern! 

5. How to Create the Pattern

Step 1 

Choose all elements and go to Object > Pattern > Make.  

In the Pattern Options, set the size to 500 x 500 px. Then place the bigger elements as you like. After that, move the watermelon’s slices and oranges. 

Step 2 

And last but not least, add the small leaves from the orange to fill up empty spaces and to create a better composition.

When you are satisfied with the result, click Done in the upper panel.

Now you will find your Pattern on the Swatches panel. 

6. How to Apply and Resize the Pattern

Step 1

Make a 500 x 500 px rectangle colored in dark purple (#281356) for the background and align it to the Artboard. 

Create another 500 x 500 px rectangle. Keeping it selected, go to the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches) and click on our pattern thumbnail. Hooray!  

Step 2

To scale the Pattern, go to Object > Transform > Scale. Then choose only Scale Pattern and set it to 70%.
